Cuando se escucha a Frank Sinatra entonar «All the Way» o «Come Fly with Me», detrás de esa voz envolvente hay una firma musical tan elegante como inconfundible: Jimmy Van Heusen. Maestro de la canción romántica y cómplice de los grandes crooners del siglo XX, Van Heusen fue mucho más que un compositor de melodías pegadizas; fue el arquitecto musical de un Hollywood soñador, sofisticado y profundamente humano. Jimmy Van Heusen nació como Edward Chester Babcock el 26 de enero de 1913 en Syracuse, Nueva York. De familia de clase media, su vida no apuntaba necesariamente a los focos de Hollywood, pero desde muy joven se sintió atraído por el piano y el mundo del espectáculo. Cambió su nombre a «Jimmy Van Heusen» mientras aún era adolescente, tomando prestado el nombre de una famosa marca de camisas —un toque de estilo que anticipaba su futura elegancia musical.
Van Heusen no cursó estudios musicales formales exhaustivos, pero sí asistió brevemente a la Universidad de Syracuse, donde comenzó a desarrollar su oído armónico y su gusto por las armonías sofisticadas. Aprendió de oído, de las noches frente a la radio, de los clubes y de la experiencia directa. Su verdadero conservatorio fue el universo vibrante de la música popular americana de los años 30.
El salto a la música de cine se produjo después de hacerse un nombre como compositor de canciones para la radio y el teatro. Fue en la década de 1940 cuando Van Heusen se consolidó como un compositor de cabecera en Hollywood, especialmente gracias a su alianza con el letrista Johnny Burke. Su primer gran éxito cinematográfico fue “Swinging on a Star”, escrita para ‘Siguiendo mi camino’ (1944), con Bing Crosby como protagonista. La canción no solo fue un fenómeno popular: le valió a Van Heusen su primer Oscar.
A partir de ahí, su nombre comenzó a sonar en todos los estudios importantes. Su asociación posterior con Sammy Cahn, otro letrista legendario, consolidaría una de las duplas más prolíficas de la historia del cine musical.

Sus canciones no eran solo acompañamiento: eran pequeñas piezas de dramaturgia musical, capaces de condensar en tres minutos el alma de un personaje o el tono de una historia.
Jimmy Van Heusen era, ante todo, un melódico. Sus líneas musicales fluían con una naturalidad casi engañosa, como si siempre hubieran estado allí, esperando ser descubiertas. Su estilo combinaba armonías sofisticadas, un swing ligero y un lirismo romántico muy característico.
No era sinfónico en el sentido clásico, pero sí sabía cómo vestir una melodía con la orquesta justa.
