Leslie Bricusse

El compositor, letrista y dramaturgo inglés Leslie Bricusse tiene en su haber más de 40 espectáculos musicales y películas. Bricusse ha trabajado con los más célebres como John Barry, Henry Mancini, John Williams entre otros. Ha ganado dos Oscars (de diez nominaciones), un Grammy (de nueve nominaciones) además de otros premios y reconocimientos.
Bricusse recibió su educación en la University College School de Londres, luego pasó a Gonville y Caius College, Cambridge. Estando en Cambridge a principios de la década de 1950, comenzó a escribir musicales. El primer guion y partitura de su primera película fue; ‘Charley Moon’ (1956). Una canción de la película, «Out of Town», se convirtió en un éxito en el Reino Unido. Aquello le llevaría a dedicarse a la composición de canciones y musicales.
Sus excelentes obras le condujeron a Broadway. En 1964, él y su compañero profesional Anthony Newley escribieron la letra de «Goldfinger» de John Barry, la canción principal de la película de James Bond, que se hizo mundialmente famosa en la versión cantada por Shirley Bassey. El vínculo con Barry continuaría en 1967 con «You Only Live Twice». En 1967 escribió la partitura para la película ‘Doctor Dolittle’, protagonizada por Rex Harrison.
Su canción «Talk to the Animals” ganó el Oscar. Las tres partituras que siguieron: ‘Adios, Mr. Chips’ (1969), ‘Muchas gracias, Mr. Scrooge’ (1970) y ‘Willy Wonka y la fábrica de chocolate’ (1971), fueron nominadas para los Premios de la Academia. La canción «The Candy Man», de ‘Willy Wonka’, estaba interpretada por Sammy Davis, Jr., y estuvo en las listas de éxitos.
En 1978, fue el autor de las letras de las canciones de ‘Superman’ («Can You Read My Mind?») y ‘La venganza de la pantera rosa’ (Move ‘em Out). Leslie Bricusse volvería a escribir junto Henry Mancini, la letra de las canciones de la película Victor / Victoria de Blake Edwards, por la que ganó un segundo Oscar. Obtuvo nominaciones posteriores por las canciones «Life in a Looking Glass» (¡Así es la vida!, 1986), «Somewhere in My Memory» (Solo en casa, 1990) y «When You’re Alone» (Hook, 1991).
Grandes intérpretes han cantado la música del compositor como Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett y especialmente Sammy Davis, Jr.
