Oscar Hammerstein II

Durante los años 40 y 50, el letrista Oscar Hammerstein II y el compositor Richard Rodgers formaron un extraordinario tándem que los llevó a la cima del éxito en Broadway y más tarde en el cine.
Nació en una familia del mundo del espectáculo en Nueva York. Su abuelo trabajaba en el teatro y era director de la compañía de ópera, y su padre regentaba un teatro de vodevil en Nueva York. Estudio en la Universidad de Columbia, la facultad de derecho. Más tarde se convirtió en director de escena en el teatro de su tío, pero no llegó a cuajar.
Durante los años 20 escribió canciones para Broadway con el letrista Otto Harbach, incluyendo ‘Showboat’ (1928) y ‘Sweet Adeline’ (1929). También colaboró con muchos compositores a lo largo de los años, incluidos George Gershwin y Jerome Kern. Pero su período más prolífico fue con el compositor Richard Rodgers. Se unieron después de que Lorenz Hart, letrista de Rodgers, muriera en 1943.


Desde este momento, Rodgers y Hammerstein fueron grandes creadores de musicales que triunfaron en Broadway y el cine. El musical; Oklahoma! (1943), por el cual recibieron un Reconocimiento especial del Premio Pulitzer (1944). La pareja musical escribió partituras tan célebres como ‘El rey y yo’ (1951) llevado al cine en 1956, y ‘Sonrisas y lágrimas’ (1959) llevado a la gran pantalla en 1965.
El compositor también es autor de las letras de canciones tan conocidas como «Ol ‘Man River» (1927), «Lover, Come Back to Me» (1928). Estas canciones con Jerome Kern. Y «Why Was I Born?» (1929) con Sigmund Romberg.
